Ministry of Graphic Design
To many, the role of graphic design is limited to the representation of existing ideas, rather than their creation, development, or disruption – and yet graphic design shapes and influences almost every visual communication we encounter. In 2018, the inaugural Fikra Graphic Design Biennial 01: Ministry of Graphic Design took place in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, with Professor Emily Smith as co-artistic director. Featuring more than 40 collective and individual participants from over 20 countries, the Biennial is the first event of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region. Emily will be presenting the project and how it challenges conventional views of graphic design.
Emily Smith focuses on the intersections between graphic design, exhibition making, choreography, and visual anthropology. Based in Berlin, Emily is Professor, Vice-Dean, and Head of Communication Design at the University of Applied Sciences Europe. In 2018, Emily served as co-Artistic Director for the inaugural Fikra Graphic Design Biennial 01: Ministry of Graphic Design in Sharjah, UAE.
